Frequently Asked Questions — Berkeley County School Closings

How does Berkeley County Schools announce school closings?

BCS posts closure and delay notices on its official website, berkeleycountyschools.org, and sends them to families through NTouch text, email and mobile app alerts. The district's NTouch alerts reach families by text, email and push notification, and contact details come from the student's Emergency Card (source: the NTouch Alerts & Mobile App page on berkeleycountyschools.org). Check berkeleycountyschools.org on mornings with winter weather.

Why do Berkeley County schools close?

Closing and delay decisions are made by BCS for its own schools. Recent district notices cite forecasted inclement weather, low temperatures and poor road conditions. This page also shows active National Weather Service alerts for Berkeley County, such as winter storm, ice storm, flood and tornado alerts. Whether a school or district closes, delays or stays open is the district's own decision.

Do local news stations report Berkeley County school closings?

Local news outlets may also report school closures, but this page does not depend on any single station. It checks official district sources and shows one consolidated status. Always confirm with your district.

Does BCS close individual schools or the whole district?

Either can happen. A closure can apply to all schools in a district or to a single campus. This page shows district-level status, so confirm an individual school's status on berkeleycountyschools.org or with the school directly.

How often is this Berkeley County school closings page updated?

Our monitor checks district feeds, local news sources and NWS alerts about every 10 to 15 minutes, and this page refreshes on its own while it is open. The last-checked time is shown on screen, and you can use "Refresh now" at any time.

What is the difference between a school closing and a school delay in Berkeley County?

A closing means in-person classes are cancelled for the day. A delay means school starts later than normal. An early dismissal means school opens as usual but students are sent home early. This page labels each status separately for every district.
