Frequently Asked Questions — Bismarck School Closings

How does Bismarck Public School District announce school closings?

BPS posts closure and delay notices on its official website, bismarckschools.org, and sends them to families through email, text and/or phone messages, its website and its social media pages. The district's inclement weather FAQ says weather decisions are made no later than 6 a.m., that a closure can be announced the night before, and that families are not notified when school runs as normal. Check bismarckschools.org on mornings with severe weather.

Why do Bismarck schools close?

BPS decides for itself whether to close, delay or stay open, and this page does not make that decision. The district's inclement weather FAQ says it looks at whether most students and staff can get to school, whether buses can pick up and return students, and whether students will be warm, safe and fed while at school. This page shows active National Weather Service alerts for Burleigh County, such as blizzard, winter storm, ice storm and wind chill alerts, because they can disrupt travel and school operations. Always confirm the decision with the district.

Do local news stations report Bismarck school closings?

Local news outlets may also report school closures, but this page does not depend on any single station. It checks official district sources and shows one consolidated status. Always confirm with your district.

Does BPS close individual schools or the whole district?

Either can happen. A closure can apply to all schools in a district or to a single campus. This page shows district-level status, so confirm an individual school's status on bismarckschools.org or with the school directly.

How often is this Bismarck school closings page updated?

Our monitor checks district feeds, local news sources and NWS alerts about every 10 to 15 minutes, and this page refreshes on its own while it is open. The last-checked time is shown on screen, and you can use "Refresh now" at any time.

What is the difference between a school closing and a school delay in Bismarck?

A closing means in-person classes are cancelled for the day. A delay means school starts later than normal. An early dismissal means school opens as usual but students are sent home early. This page labels each status separately for every district.
