Cypress School Closings Today — Live Status & Delays (Texas)

Q: What is the difference between a closure and a delay for CFISD?

A school closure means all Cypress-Fairbanks ISD campuses are closed for the entire school day — no in-person classes, no after-school programs, and all extracurricular activities cancelled. A delayed start (typically a two-hour delay) means campuses open later than normal to allow road conditions to improve. Bus pickup times are also delayed by two hours.

Q: How often is this Cypress school closings page updated?

This page checks live data sources every 15 minutes under normal conditions, and every 5 minutes during active weather alerts. During active tropical storm or flooding events, checks run even more frequently to catch last-minute announcements.

Q: Does CFISD use make-up days for weather closures?

Cypress-Fairbanks ISD builds calamity days into its academic calendar each year to cover weather-related closures without requiring make-up days. If closures exceed the built-in calamity days, the district must seek a waiver from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) or extend the school year.

How Does Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Announce School Closures?

When weather or an operational emergency threatens to affect the school day, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD (CFISD) communicates through several official channels simultaneously. The district’s primary notification tool is SchoolMessenger, which sends automated phone calls, text messages, and emails directly to families registered in the district’s parent contact system. Announcements typically go out between 5:00 and 5:30 AM on the morning of a closure or delay, though during anticipated severe tropical weather or widespread freezing events, the district often posts notices the evening before — sometimes as early as 9:00–10:00 PM. The official source is always the CFISD website (cfisd.net), where a banner alert appears on the homepage whenever a closure or delay is in effect.

Four Houston-area television stations serve as the primary broadcast partners for Cypress-Fairbanks school closing announcements: KHOU 11 CBS (khou.com/closings), KPRC Click2Houston NBC (click2houston.com/closings), KTRK ABC13 (abc13.com/closings), and KRIV FOX 26. This page monitors all four stations alongside the CFISD official website, so you receive the earliest possible status update without needing to check multiple sources yourself. Families are also encouraged to follow CFISD on social media for real-time updates during active weather events.

Weather and Hazards That Can Close Cypress-Fairbanks Schools

Flash flooding and street flooding: The most common cause of CFISD closures. Northwest Harris County’s flat topography and high impervious cover mean that heavy rain — especially from slow-moving thunderstorm complexes or tropical systems — quickly inundates neighborhood streets, school driveways, and bus routes. Even a few inches of rain over several hours can make many campuses inaccessible.
Tropical storms and hurricanes: The greater Houston area sits squarely in the Gulf of Mexico hurricane belt. Any tropical system making landfall near the upper Texas coast can force multi-day closures. CFISD coordinates shelter-in-place and evacuation guidance with Harris County emergency management during named-storm events.
Winter freezes and black ice: While rare, Arctic fronts occasionally push below-freezing temperatures into the Houston metro. Because the region lacks de-icing equipment and road crews experienced with icy conditions, even a thin glaze of ice on bridges and overpasses can prompt district-wide closures or two-hour delays to allow for morning warming.
Tornado warnings: Severe thunderstorms in southeast Texas can spawn tornadoes. When the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning for Harris County, CFISD campuses shelter in place. If a tornado warning is issued before school begins, the district may delay start times until the threat passes.
Extreme heat and power outages: During prolonged high-heat events — particularly following major storms — campuses without functioning air conditioning may close to protect students. The 2021 Winter Storm Uri caused widespread ERCOT grid failures that resulted in an extended closure across the district.
Industrial or chemical incidents: With petrochemical facilities in close proximity to parts of the CFISD service area, air quality emergencies from plant fires or releases can trigger closures or shelter-in-place orders at affected campuses.

Cypress School Closings — Frequently Asked Questions

How early does Cypress-Fairbanks ISD announce school closures?

Cypress-Fairbanks ISD (CFISD) aims to announce closures and delays by 5:00–5:30 AM on the day of a weather or operational event. When severe tropical weather or a significant freeze is anticipated overnight, the district may post notice the evening before, sometimes as early as 9:00–10:00 PM. Families registered in SchoolMessenger will receive automated calls, texts, and emails. You can also monitor cfisd.net or follow CFISD on social media for the official announcement.

What is the difference between a closure and a delay for CFISD?

A school closure means all Cypress-Fairbanks ISD campuses are closed for the entire school day — no in-person classes, no after-school programs, and all extracurricular activities cancelled. A delayed start (typically a two-hour delay) means campuses open later than normal to allow road conditions to improve in the morning. Bell schedules shift accordingly, and bus pickup times are also delayed by two hours. Always confirm your specific campus’s schedule on cfisd.net or through your SchoolMessenger notification.

Does Cy-Fair ISD close all schools at once, or can individual campuses close separately?

For district-wide weather events — flooding, freezes, tropical storms — CFISD issues a single district-wide closure or delay affecting all 91 campuses simultaneously. Individual campuses can close separately only for localized, campus-specific issues such as a burst water main, loss of power, sewage failure, or damage limited to that building. In those cases, the district contacts affected families directly through SchoolMessenger and posts campus-specific notices on cfisd.net.

Which Houston TV stations report Cy-Fair school closings?

The four main Houston television stations that broadcast Cypress-Fairbanks ISD closing information are KHOU 11 (CBS), KPRC Channel 2 (NBC), KTRK ABC13, and KRIV FOX 26. KHOU maintains a dedicated closings ticker at khou.com/closings. This page monitors all four stations automatically, so you don’t need to flip between channels or bookmark multiple closing pages.
