How Katy ISD Announces School Closures

Katy Independent School District (Katy ISD) posts closure, delay, and early-dismissal decisions directly on its official website at katyisd.org, under the district’s “Closings & Emergency Notifications” page. Families are encouraged to use the free Katy ISD OnTheGo mobile app, which pushes weather and closure updates straight to a parent’s phone, in addition to following the district’s official X account (@katyisd) and its Facebook page for real-time updates throughout a storm event.

Because Katy ISD covers a wide footprint across Harris, Fort Bend, and Waller counties, the district typically issues an initial monitoring notice a day or two ahead of expected severe weather, followed by a firmer closure or delay decision — often by early afternoon or evening the day before, and sometimes as late as early morning if conditions change overnight. Local TV stations also relay the district’s decision once it’s announced: KTRK ABC13’s closings page, KPRC 2’s Click2Houston closures hub, and KHOU 11 all maintain running lists during active weather events.

Weather Risks That Can Close Katy Schools

• Flash flooding: Katy’s flat, low-lying terrain and clay soils drain slowly, so even a few inches of rain can flood roads, underpasses, and bus routes within an hour.
• Tropical storms and hurricanes: Katy sits inland from the Gulf Coast and can still see multi-day closures from tropical systems that bring heavy rain, high winds, and widespread power outages.
• Severe thunderstorms: Spring and early summer storms can bring damaging winds, hail, and lightning that delay morning bus routes or trigger early dismissals.
• Winter freeze and ice events: Rare but disruptive, a thin layer of ice on overpasses and elevated roads is enough to close schools, since the region lacks the de-icing equipment common in colder states.
• Extreme heat advisories: Dangerously high heat indexes during late summer can affect outdoor activities, athletics, and bus air conditioning reliability.
• Power and utility outages: Storm-related outages affecting traffic signals, water service, or HVAC systems at campuses can prompt same-day closures independent of the weather itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early does Katy ISD announce school closures?

Katy ISD typically issues an initial weather-monitoring notice a day or two before an expected storm, followed by a firmer closure or delay decision — often by early afternoon or evening the day before. During fast-changing situations, such as overnight flooding, the district may also issue an early-morning update before the start of the school day.

Does Katy ISD close all schools at once, or just individual campuses?

Katy ISD almost always makes district-wide decisions rather than closing individual campuses, since weather hazards like flooding and tropical storms typically affect the entire district footprint at once. Closures, delays, and early dismissals are announced for the whole district rather than school by school.

What’s the difference between a closure and a delay for Katy ISD?

A closure means all Katy ISD campuses and facilities are closed for the day, with classes and activities cancelled. A delay means campuses open later than the normal 7:43 a.m. first bell, usually to allow icy roads to clear or flood waters to recede before buses run. The district announces which type of schedule change applies as part of its official notification.

Which Houston TV stations report Katy school closings?

KTRK ABC13, KPRC 2 (Click2Houston), and KHOU 11 are the primary Houston-market TV stations that report Katy ISD closures during active weather events. This page automatically monitors all three alongside Katy ISD’s own website and social accounts, so you get the fastest available detection without checking multiple sources yourself.

How often is this page updated?

Status checks run automatically every 15 minutes under normal conditions, or every 5 minutes during active weather alerts. The page also refreshes in the background so you always see the most current information without needing to reload.

Why does Katy ISD close for rain when it rarely snows here?

Houston-area flooding, not snow, is the primary weather threat to Katy ISD operations. The region’s flat topography and dense development mean that even a moderate rainstorm can quickly overwhelm drainage and flood roads and bus routes, which is why heavy rain and tropical weather — rather than winter weather — are the most common triggers for closures and delays in Katy.
