Mount Mansfield Unified Union School District (MMUUSD) — which covers Bolton, Huntington, Jericho, Richmond, and Underhill — posts closure and delay decisions on its official website at mmuusd.org and pushes alerts to enrolled families through SchoolMessenger. Because the district’s buses have to cover five separate towns and a mix of valley roads and steep back roads, the superintendent’s office tries to make a call as early as possible, typically by 6:00 AM on a snow morning, so families across all five communities have time to arrange childcare or adjust their commute.

Local TV coverage for the district comes from the Burlington–Plattsburgh market: WCAX Channel 3 (CBS) and WPTZ NBC5 both maintain live school-closing pages that update through the morning, and WNNE News9 also carries Vermont closures. This page checks all three stations alongside MMUUSD’s own site and the sites of the three neighboring districts shown above, so you don’t have to check each one separately.

• Heavy snowfall: A single overnight system can drop a foot or more in the hilly terrain around Bolton and Huntington, faster than plows can clear narrow town roads before morning buses run.
• Ice storms and freezing rain: A thin glaze of ice on unpaved or lightly-traveled roads in Underhill and Richmond is often more dangerous — and more likely to trigger a delay — than several inches of snow on a well-plowed state highway.
• Sub-zero wind chill: Extended stretches of dangerously cold mornings can lead districts to delay start times so students aren’t waiting at unsheltered rural bus stops in extreme cold.
• Mud season (March–April): Vermont’s spring thaw can turn unpaved back roads in Huntington and Bolton into deep mud, occasionally making them impassable for buses even without any snow falling that day.
• Spring flooding: Heavy rain combined with snowmelt can raise the Winooski River and its tributaries near Richmond and Jericho enough to close low-lying roads used by school buses.
• Power outages: Wind and ice storms frequently knock out power to individual school buildings in this rural area before affecting the wider region, which can force a single-building closure even when neighboring towns are unaffected.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early does Mount Mansfield Unified Union School District announce school closures?

MMUUSD generally aims to announce a closure or delay by 6:00 AM, posting the decision to its website and sending a SchoolMessenger alert to enrolled families. Because the call affects five towns with different road conditions, the district sometimes waits slightly later on borderline mornings to get an accurate read on all the routes before deciding.

What’s the difference between a delay and a closure for MMUUSD?

A delay pushes the start of the school day back — commonly two hours — to let plows and sanding crews finish clearing roads, while morning bus pickups shift back by the same amount. A closure cancels the school day entirely, usually because road conditions across multiple member towns are considered unsafe even with extra time to clear them.

Do all the schools in the district close at the same time?

Usually yes — since Mount Mansfield Union High School and both middle schools draw students from multiple towns, a single districtwide decision covers all eight schools together. An individual elementary school could still close on its own for a building-specific issue, like a local power outage, even when the rest of the district is open.

Which local TV stations report Mount Mansfield area school closings?

WCAX Channel 3 (CBS) and WPTZ NBC5 are the two main stations that maintain running school-closing lists for the Burlington–Plattsburgh market, and WNNE News9 also carries Vermont closures. This page checks all three automatically alongside MMUUSD’s own site.

How often is this page updated?

The page rechecks official sources automatically every 15 minutes, or every 5 minutes during an active weather alert, so the status shown reflects the most recent check rather than a fixed morning snapshot.

Are Essex Westford, Champlain Valley, or Harwood district calendars covered here too?

Their live open/closed/delay status is monitored on this page alongside MMUUSD’s, but detailed academic-calendar data (holidays, breaks, early-release days) is only sourced for MMUUSD, the page’s primary district. Check each neighboring district’s own site for its full calendar.
