How Natrona County Schools Announces Closures

Natrona County school closings today are determined by Natrona County School District #1 (NCSD1), which covers the entire county — Casper plus the outlying communities of Mills, Evansville, Bar Nunn, Midwest, Alcova, and Powder River. The district posts closure and delay decisions on its official website at natronaschools.org, and pushes the same notice out through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal messaging system to families who’ve set their notification preferences. Like most Wyoming districts monitoring an overnight storm, NCSD1 aims to make the call as early as possible, typically by 5:30–6:00 AM, though a system that intensifies overnight can occasionally push the announcement later.

Local television is the fastest secondary source once a decision posts. KTWO-TV (ABC 2) and its sister station KGWC-TV (CBS 14) both run under the “Your Wyoming Link” newsroom, while KCWY-DT (NBC 13, “Wyoming News Now”) maintains its own closures list. This page checks all three stations alongside the district’s own site so a closure or delay shows up here as fast as it’s confirmed anywhere.

Weather Risks That Trigger School Closures in Natrona County

• Blizzards and ground blizzards. Wind-driven snow can cut visibility to near zero on the open plains between Casper and outlying communities, even when snowfall totals are modest.
• High wind events. Natrona County regularly sees sustained winds over 30 mph and gusts past 50–60 mph, especially along I-25, Casper Outer Drive, and the Rattlesnake Range corridor — strong enough to threaten high-profile vehicles like school buses.
• Extreme wind chill. Sub-zero wind chill readings are common in December through February and can make bus stops and walking routes dangerous even without falling snow.
• Icy roads. A relatively small amount of freezing precipitation can glaze rural county roads that lack the traffic volume to stay clear, affecting bus routes to outlying schools before it visibly affects town streets.
• Whiteout conditions on rural bus routes. Because NCSD1 covers the entire county, buses serving Midwest, Alcova, Powder River, and other outlying areas can face closure-worthy conditions on a day when in-town Casper streets look clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early does Natrona County School District #1 announce school closures?

NCSD1 typically announces closures and delays by 5:30–6:00 AM on the day of the event, posting to its official website and pushing alerts through ParentSquare and SchoolMessenger. During a fast-developing overnight storm, the announcement can occasionally come later in the morning.

What’s the difference between a school closure and a delayed start in Natrona County?

A closure means no school for students district-wide that day. A delayed start means school still happens but begins later than usual (commonly one or two hours), giving road crews and bus routes more time before pickup. NCSD1 announces which one applies alongside any closure notice.

Do all Natrona County schools close at the same time, or can individual schools close separately?

Because NCSD1 is a single countywide district, closure and delay decisions are made district-wide rather than school-by-school — if the district closes, all NCSD1 schools are closed that day, including outlying schools in Midwest and other communities. Neighboring districts shown on this page (Fremont County SD #25, Converse County SD #1, Carbon County SD #1) make their own separate decisions for their own county.

Which local TV stations report Casper-area school closings?

KTWO-TV (ABC 2), KCWY-DT (NBC 13, “Wyoming News Now”), and KGWC-TV (CBS 14) are the primary Casper-market stations reporting school closings. This page automatically monitors all three alongside the district’s own website.

How often is this page updated?

Status checks run automatically every 15 minutes, or every 5 minutes during active weather alerts, so you always see the most current information without needing to refresh manually.

Does a Casper-area closure affect Riverton, Douglas, or Rawlins schools too?

Not necessarily. Fremont County SD #25 (Riverton), Converse County SD #1 (Douglas), and Carbon County SD #1 (Rawlins) are separate districts in separate counties, each making independent closure decisions based on conditions in their own area. This page tracks all four districts live so families anywhere in central Wyoming can check one place.
