School Closings and Delays Today (December 31, 2025)
On Wednesday, December 31, 2025 (New Year’s Eve), schools across the United States are almost universally CLOSED.
Because this date falls in the middle of the traditional Winter Break (also known as Holiday Recess), students and staff are not in school regardless of weather conditions.
While schools are already closed for the holidays, parts of the US are experiencing wintry weather that would have caused delays if school were in session:
-
Northeast/Mid-Atlantic: A storm system has brought snow and ice to portions of Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
-
Midwest: Extremely cold temperatures and “wind chill alerts” are active in states like Minnesota and North Dakota, making outdoor holiday events difficult.
When do students return?
Most students will remain on break for the remainder of this week.
-
Reopening Date: The majority of US schools will reopen on Monday, January 5, 2026.
-
Teacher Workdays: Some districts have a staff-only day on January 5, with students returning on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
For the most current information on school closings or delays in specific areas, it’s advisable to check local news outlets or official school district communications.
