Today, Friday, February 20, 2026, is a standard school day for most districts. While many schools were closed earlier this week for Presidents’ Day, students are now back in full swing to wrap up the week.
Note: Today is also National Love Your Pet Day. Keep an eye out for “Paws-itively Healthy” signage or pet-themed stickers on fruit in some elementary cafeterias!
National Trends: “Pizza Friday” & “Fish Fry”
Friday remains the most predictable day in the American cafeteria.
-
Pizza Friday: Still the undisputed king. Roughly 70% of US schools serve some form of pizza today (cheese, pepperoni, or “French Bread” style).
-
The Lenten Shift: Since we are currently in the season of Lent, many districts—particularly in the Northeast and Midwest—are offering Fish Friday specials like crispy fish sliders or fish sticks to accommodate dietary preferences.

Food News: The “Whole Milk” Rollout
The biggest buzz in the teacher’s lounge and the cafeteria line this week is the implementation of the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act of 2025, signed into law just last month.
-
Whole Milk Re-Entry: Schools are officially allowed to serve Whole and 2% milk (flavored and unflavored) again. Many districts have spent this week updating their dairy orders, so don’t be surprised if your child mentions “the red carton” is back.
-
Sodium Watch: Districts are currently working toward the Target 1A sodium reduction, meaning those Friday pizza crusts and fish breadings are likely using new, lower-sodium spice blends to meet the < 1,080mg limit for high schools.
-
Sugar Cap Reminder: All flavored milk on the line today must strictly adhere to the 10g of added sugar per 8oz limit that took effect earlier this school year.
Lunchbox Idea: The “DIY Pizza” Bistro Box
If your child wants the Friday Pizza vibe without the cafeteria line, try this healthy, deconstructed version:
The Pizza Dipper Box
-
The Base: 2-3 whole-wheat mini pita rounds or flatbread crackers.
-
The Sauce: A small container of low-sodium marinara sauce.
-
The Protein: Two sticks of low-fat string cheese (to be peeled and placed on the bread) and a few slices of turkey pepperoni.
-
The Side: “Pet-themed” snacks for Love Your Pet Day—like “Scooby Snacks” (graham cracker bones) or small apple slices.
-
The Drink: A thermos of cold water with frozen berries acting as ice cubes.
