School Lunch Menu Today & Nutrition Trends: March 23, 2026

March 23, 2026 is a mixed bag across the U.S. While many districts are in session, several major districts—including Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Chicago Public Schools (CPS)—are officially closed today for Spring Break.

However, since the majority of the country (including NYC and LAUSD) remains in session, we will follow the Standard Format to cover the active cafeterias, while noting the closures for our vacationing friends.

Quick Alerts: The “Need-to-Know” Bullets

  • SUN Bucks Deadline: Families not automatically enrolled for Summer EBT (SUN Bucks) have until March 31 in many states to update their mailing addresses with their school or local agency to ensure cards arrive for Summer 2026.

  • National Nutrition Month: We are in the final full week of National Nutrition Month®. Many cafeterias are hosting “Taste Test” events today to vote on new menu items for the 2026-27 school year.

  • Whole Milk Rollout: Following the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act (signed Jan 2026), districts like NYC are in their second month of offering unflavored whole milk alongside traditional options.

National Trends: “Meatless Monday” & Spring Equinox Specials

Today’s theme is a heavy lean into Meatless Monday. With the Spring Equinox having just passed, many “Farm-to-School” programs are highlighting sugar snap peas and radishes in their garden bars today.

Regional Highlights: What’s on the Tray?

District Monday, March 23 Entrée Notable Sides / Features
NYC Public Schools Plant-Based Chili w/ Tortilla Chips Fresh NY State apples & sliced cucumbers.
LAUSD (Los Angeles) Zesty Bean & Cheese Pupusa “Harvest of the Month” citrus wedges.
Miami-Dade CLOSED (Spring Break) No school meals served today.
Chicago (CPS) CLOSED (Spring Break) No school meals served today.

Food News: USDA Policy Updates 2026

The cafeteria landscape has changed significantly this year:

  • Milk Flexibilities: Per the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act of 2025 (effective early 2026), schools can now serve whole and 2% milk. Notably, the saturated fat in this milk does not count toward the weekly average fat limits for the lunch program, allowing for richer dairy options without compromising the rest of the menu’s nutritional profile.

  • Sugar Limits: We are now under the strict 10g limit for added sugars in flavored milk. This has pushed manufacturers to use natural flavorings and monk fruit or stevia blends to maintain the “chocolate” taste students love.

  • Sodium Watch: Districts are currently adhering to Sodium Target 1A, aiming for a total weekly average of less than 1,110mg for K-5 students.

Lunchbox Idea: The “Spring Garden” Wrap

For students at home or those skipping the “Meatless Monday” chili, try this fresh alternative:

  • The Wrap: Whole-wheat tortilla with hummus, shredded carrots, thinly sliced cucumbers, and baby spinach.

  • The Protein Side: A handful of roasted edamame or a cheese stick.

  • The Sweet Finish: Sliced strawberries (peak season starts now!) with a small dollop of Greek yogurt.
