Weekend Weather Alert: Monday School Outlook (Mar 23, 2026)
As we enter the first full week of spring, winter is refusing to let go in the North, while extreme rain and flood threats dominate the tropics and coastal regions. For many school districts, Monday morning will require extra caution as localized alerts remain in effect.
The ‘Red Zone’ Report
While the “Blizzard of 2026” from February has passed, a new “Red Zone” has emerged due to a second Kona Storm and shifting Arctic air:
-
Hawaii (The Critical Zone): A Flood Watch remains in effect through Sunday night for Maui County. High-impact areas including Lahaina, Kīhei, and the ʻĪao Valley are under evacuation warnings due to saturated ground and the threat of flash flooding.
-
The Pacific Northwest: A strengthening Atmospheric River is forecast to make landfall late Monday, March 23. This system brings a high risk of heavy rain and coastal flooding for western Washington and Oregon.
-
The Midwest & Northeast: A late-season Arctic surge is keeping temperatures 10–15 degrees below normal. While major snowfall is not currently under a “Watch,” black ice and light dusting (1–3 inches) remain a threat for the Monday morning commute in the Great Lakes region.
-
Wind Gusts: Peak gusts of 40–50 mph are expected along the Pacific Northwest coast and across the Hawaiian Islands, posing a risk to high-profile vehicles.
Travel Impact: Bus Safety Concerns
The primary threat to school bus safety this Monday is water on the roadway and reduced visibility. In Hawaii, flash flood warnings mean that bus routes near rivers or low-lying coastal roads may be impassable or prone to sudden washouts.
In the Pacific Northwest, the incoming atmospheric river will create heavy spray and hydroplaning risks for early morning routes. Drivers are urged to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” and to expect delays as maintenance crews clear debris caused by 40 mph gusts.

Secondary Outlook: Canada
In Canada, a lingering Arctic high is keeping a “deep freeze” over Ontario and Quebec. While major snowstorms have subsided, extreme cold and wind chills remain a factor for students waiting at bus stops. Meanwhile, British Columbia is preparing for the same Pacific storm system impacting the US, with heavy rain expected to transition to snow in higher elevations by Monday night.
Weekend Safety Tip
With high winds and heavy rain forecast for several regions, families should check their sump pumps and clear storm drains of any leftover winter debris or early spring mulch. Ensuring water can flow away from your home will help prevent localized flooding during Sunday night’s downpours.
