Will There Be School Tomorrow? (Feb 16, 2026)

Date: February 16, 2026 Status: 🏛️ Federal Holiday (Washington’s Birthday / Presidents’ Day)

While most schools and government offices are closed today in observance of Presidents’ Day, weather safety remains a top priority for families enjoying the long weekend at home or traveling. Severe weather systems are currently impacting several regions of the country, and we urge all citizens to stay weather-ready.

📍 Current Risk Map: Top 3 High-Alert Regions

NWS has identified the following zones as under significant risk today:

  1. California (Sierra Nevada Mountains): 🔴 Winter Storm Warning. A massive system is delivering heavy snow (up to 5 feet in high elevations) and wind gusts up to 60 mph. Travel is considered difficult to impossible through the mountain passes.

  2. Southern California Coast: 🟡 Flood Watch. Heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding are expected across Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and San Diego counties as a strong cold front moves through.

  3. The Southwest (AZ/NV): 🟠 Wind Advisory. Sustained southwest winds of 25–35 mph with gusts reaching 55 mph are impacting the high deserts and foothills.

🚗 Holiday Travel Impact

If you are heading home from a holiday trip today, please be aware of these disruptions:

  • Sierra Nevada: Chain requirements and road closures are likely on major routes. Do not attempt mountain travel without an emergency kit.

  • Southwest Corridors: Strong gusts in the Southwest may impact high-profile vehicles on I-10 and I-15. Drivers of vans, campers, and large trucks should use extra caution.

  • Southern Coast: Heavy rain may cause ponding on coastal highways; remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.
