Will There Be School Tomorrow? (Mar 3, 2026)

Today, Tuesday, March 3, 2026, is not a US Federal Holiday. However, it is Town Meeting Day in Vermont, where many schools and local government offices are closed for community business. For the rest of the nation, school is in session, though several regions are facing high-risk weather patterns that may trigger delays or early dismissals.

NWS Warning Search & High-Risk Zones

The NWS is tracking a complex spring transition system. We have identified three primary High-Risk Zones for today:

  • The Central Plains (Oklahoma & Kansas): The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a Marginal Risk for Severe Thunderstorms. As a warm front lifts northward, isolated supercells capable of producing large hail and gusty winds are expected to develop this afternoon.

  • The Mid-Atlantic & Appalachians: Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for parts of the Northeast. After a mix of snow and sleet overnight, the primary threat has shifted to ice accretion ($0.1$ to $0.3$ inches) across the higher terrain of West Virginia and Virginia, making mountain travel extremely treacherous.

  • The Ohio Valley (Missouri to Ohio): A Marginal Risk for Excessive Rainfall is active. Heavy downpours may lead to localized flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and school zones with poor drainage.

Current Risk Map

  1. Oklahoma/Kansas: High risk for sudden severe storms during the afternoon bus dismissal window.

  2. Appalachian Mountains: Dangerous “Black Ice” conditions on rural roads and high-elevation passes.

  3. California Coast/Bay Area: Heavy cloud cover and coastal fog may impact morning visibility for students and drivers.

Travel Impact

While there is no holiday travel today, the Tuesday morning commute is heavily impacted in the Northeast. Sleet and freezing rain have left a slick glaze on I-81 and I-64. In the Plains, strong southerly winds ahead of the cold front may cause “high-profile vehicle” instability for school buses on north-south routes like I-35.
