Nevada School Closings

In Nevada, school schedules are primarily influenced by two distinct factors: heavy winter snowfall in the northern Sierras and extreme heat or air quality issues in the southern desert regions.

How to Stay Informed

Nevada districts use localized alert systems to notify parents of changes. If weather is pending, check these official sources by 6:00 AM:

Understanding Nevada’s Unique Delay Categories

Because Nevada faces both blizzards and wildfires, the “Delay” or “Closure” criteria can vary:

1. The 2-Hour “Snow” Delay (Northern Nevada)

Common in Reno, Sparks, and Carson City. School starts exactly two hours late.

  • Buses: Pick up students two hours later than the usual time.

  • Breakfast: Typically not served on delayed start days.

  • Dismissal: Remains at the standard time.

2. Air Quality Closures (Wildfire Season)

In Northern Nevada, schools may close if the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaches hazardous levels (typically 400+ or sustained high levels). If the AQI is between 150–400, schools usually stay open but cancel all outdoor activities, recess, and PE.

3. Extreme Heat Procedures (Southern Nevada)

In Clark County, schools rarely close for heat but implement “Heat Action Days.” During these times:

  • Outdoor sports and practices are moved indoors or after sunset.

  • Strenuous outdoor activity is prohibited when temperatures exceed specific safety thresholds.

Parent Tip: “Winter Bus Stops”

If you live in Washoe County or Incline Village, your district may activate “Winter Bus Stops.” This means that during heavy snow, buses will not travel into steep or narrow side streets. Students must meet the bus at a designated main-road intersection. Ensure you have identified your winter stop location before the first major storm hits.

Note: If you feel it is unsafe to drive your child even if schools are open, districts generally allow parents to keep children home, though these are often marked as “unexcused” unless a specific emergency is cited.
