When severe weather hits, school districts often have to make the tough decision to delay or close schools. In some cases, however, school officials are unable to make up the lost time, and end up extending the school year, adding to the cost of running a school district. In order to help school districts better plan for weather-related school closings, the National Weather Service has created a new weather-related school closing information system that helps school administrators make better informed decisions about school closings and delays.
