Utah School Closings

When severe winter weather, heavy snow, or freezing temperatures impact the Beehive State, school districts from Logan to St. George must make the difficult call on whether to open, delay, or close entirely.

In Utah, school closing decisions are decentralized, meaning each district superintendent makes the call based on local road conditions, visibility, and bus safety.

How to Get Real-Time Alerts

Utah school districts use several primary methods to notify parents of a “Snow Day” or a “Two-Hour Delay.

1. The Official District Website

Most districts, like Salt Lake City and Nebo, maintain a dedicated “Weather Status” page. If no announcement is posted by 6:30 AM, it typically means school is proceeding as scheduled.

2. Direct Messaging (Text/Email)

Ensure your contact information is updated in PowerSchool or Skyward. Most Utah districts send automated texts and emails between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM on the morning of a storm.

3. Local News Outlets

Major local news stations provide live tickers and searchable databases:

  • KSL 5 TV: Known for their comprehensive “Closings and Delays” list.

  • KUTV 2News: Provides frequent updates during morning broadcasts.

  • FOX 13 & ABC 4: Offer mobile app alerts specifically for school changes.

Standard Weather Procedures

If a change is made, it will usually fall into one of these three categories:

Status Details
Two-Hour Delay School starts 2 hours late. Busses arrive 2 hours later than normal. No morning preschool or kindergarten.
Emergency Remote Learning The physical building is closed, but students are expected to log in via Canvas or Google Classroom for a “virtual” school day.
Full Closure (Snow Day) All classes and after-school activities are canceled. This day must usually be made up later in the year.

“The Parent’s Call”

Most Utah districts, including Park City and Alpine, have a standing policy: The final decision rests with the parent. If you feel that your local street or neighborhood is too dangerous for your child to travel, districts generally allow an excused absence for weather-related safety concerns, even if the school remains open.
