Baltimore County Public Schools Latest School Closings and Delays

As a major winter storm impacts the Mid-Atlantic region, Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) has issued official updates regarding school operations. With heavy snow and ice affecting travel across Maryland, parents and staff should stay alert for changes to the academic calendar.

Understanding the 2025-2026 Virtual Learning Plan

For the current school year, BCPS follows a specific sequence for inclement weather days as approved by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE):

  1. First 3 Days: These are traditional “snow days.” Schools are fully closed, and no instruction (virtual or otherwise) takes place. These days are made up at the end of the school year in June.

  2. Day 4 and Beyond: If the district exceeds three closures, BCPS may transition to Virtual Instruction Days.

  3. Virtual Schedule: On virtual days, instruction typically begins two hours later than the normal school start time to allow families to prepare and log in.

Note: As of today, Jan. 26, BCPS is utilizing its traditional snow days.

Where to Find Real-Time Updates

BCPS utilizes several “Team BCPS” channels to broadcast emergency information. You can verify the status of your school through:

  • Official Website: The BCPS.org homepage features a red alert banner at the top of the page during emergencies.

  • Social Media: Follow @BCPS_Schools on X (formerly Twitter) or Baltimore County Public Schools on Facebook.

  • BCPS TV: Tune into Comcast Cable Channel 1073 or Verizon Fios Channel 34.

  • Direct Alerts: Ensure your contact information is updated in the Focus Parent Portal to receive automated emails, texts, and phone calls.

How Decisions Are Made

The Superintendent makes the call on closings and delays usually by 5:00 a.m. based on a variety of factors:

  • Bus Safety: Can the district’s 600+ buses safely navigate narrow county roads?

  • Plowing Progress: Are school parking lots and “walking zones” cleared?

  • Building Health: Are there any power outages or heating failures caused by the storm?
