Big Island Now Latest School Closings and Delays

| | Hawaii | No Comments

In the Hawaiian Islands, “snow days” may be rare, but heavy tropical rains, flash flooding, and volcanic activity can frequently disrupt the school calendar. Big Island Now serves as the primary digital news source for real-time updates on school closings and delays across the County of Hawai’i.

How Big Island Now Reports Closures

Unlike the mainland, where snow is the primary culprit, Big Island school disruptions are usually caused by Flash Flood Warnings, High Wind Advisories, or occasionally, Vog (volcanic smog) levels.

Big Island Now provides several ways to stay informed:

Breaking News Alerts: Immediate articles are posted to the Big Island Now homepage the moment the HIDOE or private school administrators announce a change.
Social Media Sync: Updates are mirrored on their Facebook and X (Twitter) feeds, which are often the fastest way for parents to receive mobile notifications.
Email Newsletters: Daily digests include a “Weather & Traffic” section that highlights any upcoming school interruptions.

What to Look For: HIDOE vs. Charter & Private

It is important to distinguish between the different types of closures reported on the Big Island:

Type of School	How Closures are Announced
Public (HIDOE)	Decisions are made by the Complex Area Superintendent. A closure usually affects an entire “complex” (e.g., all schools feeding into Hilo High).
Public Charter	These schools often make independent decisions. Big Island Now lists these separately from the HIDOE updates.
Private Schools	Schools like Kamehameha Schools Hawaii or Parker School will notify Big Island Now directly of their specific status.

Understanding “Modified Operations”

On the Big Island, you may see statuses that differ from standard “Closed” or “Open” labels:

Shelter-in-Place: School is not canceled, but students are kept indoors due to high winds or poor air quality (Vog).
Early Release: Often triggered by a Flash Flood Warning if bus routes are expected to become impassable due to rising stream levels (common in North Hilo and Hamakua).
Bus Route Cancellations: Occasionally, school remains open, but specific rural bus routes are canceled if “yellow bus” access is blocked by downed trees or utility lines.

Safety First

The Hawaii State Department of Education advises parents that even if a school is officially open, the final decision on safety rests with the family. If your specific neighborhood is experiencing localized flooding or debris, Big Island Now encourages residents to prioritize safety and report road hazards to the Hawaii Police Department.
