Illinois School Closings
As winter weather patterns shift across the Midwest, staying informed about school schedules in Illinois is critical for families from Chicago to Carbondale. Unlike smaller states, Illinois school decisions are often regional, influenced by lake-effect snow in the north and ice storms in the central and southern counties.

Where to Find Real-Time Updates
Because Illinois has over 850 school districts, there is no single “master list” for the entire state. Instead, parents should use these primary resources:
1. The Emergency Closing Center (ECC)
The Emergency Closing Center is the gold standard for the Chicagoland area. It provides a searchable database of schools, businesses, and daycare centers for Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties.
2. Regional News Hubs
For areas outside of Chicago, local news stations provide dedicated trackers:
-
Central IL: WAND TV and WCIA cover Springfield, Decatur, and Champaign.
-
Western IL / Quad Cities: WQAD provides updates for Moline and surrounding areas.
-
Southern IL: WSIL TV covers the Carbondale and Marion regions.
E-Learning vs. Snow Days
Illinois law allows school districts to use E-learning Days in place of traditional “snow days.” This allows students to learn from home and prevents the school year from being extended into June.
Note: Not every district uses E-learning. Some, like Crystal Lake District 47, opt for traditional “emergency days” that are made up at the end of the year. Always check your specific district’s handbook for their inclement weather policy.
Safety Thresholds
Most Illinois superintendents use the following general guidelines when considering a weather-related closure:
-
Wind Chill: Usually triggered when the wind chill is predicted to be -20°F to -30°F or colder.
-
Snow Accumulation: Generally 6+ inches within a short window, or any amount that prevents DPW from clearing primary bus routes.
-
Ice: Often considered more dangerous than snow; even a thin glaze can trigger a 2-hour delay to allow salt trucks time to work.
