How to Check PIX11 School Closings

PIX11 aggregates closing data from hundreds of school districts, private academies, and daycare centers. You can track updates through the following methods:

  1. PIX11 Online Closing Tracker: Visit PIX11.com/weather/closings for the full searchable database. You can filter by state (NY, NJ, CT) or search for your specific district by name.

  2. Morning News Broadcast: Watch PIX11 Morning News starting at 4:30 AM. Closings and delays are displayed on the “crawler” at the bottom of the screen and are updated every few minutes.

  3. PIX11 News App: Download the app on iOS or Android and enable weather alerts. During major storms, the app often features a direct link to the live closing list on the home screen.

Important Policy: Remote Learning vs. Snow Days

It is important for New York City parents to note that the NYC Department of Education (DOE) has largely transitioned away from traditional “snow days.

Note: On days when weather makes travel unsafe, the NYC DOE may opt for a Remote Learning Day instead of a full closure. Students are expected to log in to their classrooms via Google Classroom or Microsoft Teams. PIX11 will specify if a school is “Closed” or “Remote” in their listings.

Types of Schedule Changes

When viewing the PIX11 list, look for these specific designations:

Status Instruction
Closed No school for students or staff.
90-Minute/2-Hour Delay School starts later to allow for road salting and plowing. Buses run on the same delayed schedule.
Early Dismissal Students are sent home several hours early to beat incoming afternoon snow or ice.
Remote Learning Physical buildings are closed, but classes are held online.

Why Some Schools Stay Open

PIX11 often reports on the factors that go into these decisions. Superintendents generally base their calls on:

  • Bus Safety: Can the buses maintain traction on hilly or unplowed secondary roads?

  • Staff Commutes: A significant portion of teachers often live outside the district; if they cannot travel, the school cannot safely open.

  • Heating and Power: In extreme cold, older buildings may experience pipe bursts or boiler failures that force an immediate closure regardless of road conditions.
