South Carolina School Closings

When unpredictable weather or emergencies hit the Palmetto State, staying informed about school schedules is a priority for families from the Upstate to the Lowcountry. While South Carolina’s climate is generally mild, localized flooding, winter weather, and high winds can quickly change a school day’s status.

Where to Find Official Closing Information

In South Carolina, school closing decisions are made at the district level by the Superintendent. You can find the most accurate and immediate updates through these official sources:

1. The SC School Closings Portal

The South Carolina Department of Education maintains a centralized website at SCSchoolClosings.com. This site provides a live, alphabetized list of every public school district, state agency, and many private schools.

2. Local News Outlets

Major regional news stations provide “Closing Crawls” on-air and searchable databases online:

  • Upstate: WYFF 4, WSPA 7

  • Midlands: WIS-TV, WLTX 19

  • Lowcountry: WCSC 5 (Live 5 News), WCBD 2 (News 2)

3. District Notification Systems

Most SC districts (such as Fort Mill, Aiken, and Beaufort) utilize ParentSquare or Blackboard Messenger. Ensure your contact information is updated in your school’s PowerSchool portal to receive automated texts and phone calls, which are usually sent by 5:30 AM on the morning of a weather event.

Understanding “eLearning Days”

South Carolina has become a leader in utilizing eLearning days to avoid using make-up days at the end of the year.

  • What it means: Students do not report to the building but complete assignments via Google Classroom or Canvas.

  • The Limit: State law typically allows for up to five eLearning days per school year. Once a district exhausts these, they must use “Weather Make-Up Days” usually built into the calendar (often during spring break or at the end of May).

High Wind Protocols

Unlike many northern states, South Carolina districts often delay or close schools specifically for wind.

Note: South Carolina state law prohibits school buses from operating when sustained winds exceed 30 mph or when gusts exceed 40 mph. Even if the sun is shining, your district may delay school if tropical remnants or strong fronts make bus travel unsafe.
