How to Access the TMJ4 Closing List
TMJ4 provides several ways to check if your school is affected. The list is updated in real-time as superintendents report their decisions.
-
TMJ4 Snow Closings Portal: The most direct way to see the full list is the TMJ4 School Closings Dashboard. It is organized alphabetically by county.
-
The “Storm Shield” App: You can download the TMJ4 weather app and save your specific school district to receive an instant push notification the moment a status change is announced.
-
On-Air Ticker: During TMJ4 News Today (starting at 4:30 AM), the closing ticker scrolls along the bottom of the screen.
Common Closure Types
Superintendents in Southeast Wisconsin typically choose one of three options based on the severity of the weather:
| Option | Impact on Students |
| Closed / No Classes | Schools are shut down. Typically, this includes the cancellation of all after-school sports and community events. |
| 2-Hour Delay | School starts two hours later than normal. Buses will also run two hours behind their usual schedule. Breakfast is often not served on these days. |
| Virtual Learning Day | Physical buildings are closed, but students are expected to log in for remote instruction. This is increasingly common to avoid adding “make-up days” to June. |
The Decision-Making Process
Superintendents often begin their day at 3:30 AM, consulting with TMJ4 meteorologists and local law enforcement. For a “Snow Day” or “Cold Day” to be called, they look at several factors:
-
The “Bus Test”: Can the diesel engines start (in extreme cold), and can the buses safely navigate unplowed side streets?
-
Wind Chill: If wind chills are forecast to be -35°F or lower, many districts (including MPS) will close to protect students waiting at bus stops.
-
Timing: A storm hitting at 5:00 AM is much more likely to cause a closure than one hitting at 10:00 PM the night before.
