Understanding the Delay System

West Michigan districts typically use a tiered system for weather responses:

Status	Impact on Your Day
90-Minute/2-Hour Delay	Most common for morning fog or light icing. Buses run exactly 2 hours late. Morning preschool is often canceled.
Closed / Remote Learning	School buildings are closed. Some districts may pivot to a “Remote Learning Day” if they have reached their state-allotted snow day limit.
Early Dismissal	Used when heavy snow is expected to start mid-afternoon. Students are sent home early to ensure buses beat the worst of the accumulation.

The “Snow Day” Decision Process

Superintendents in Kent, Ottawa, and Muskegon counties typically begin driving the roads as early as 3:30 AM. They coordinate with Storm Team 8 to determine if:

Visibility is high enough for bus drivers.
Wind Chill is above the “danger zone” (usually -20°F or lower) for students at bus stops.
Road Crews have had enough time to clear primary and secondary routes.
