Indiana School Closings

As winter weather moves across the Hoosier State, keeping track of school schedules is a top priority for families. Whether it’s heavy snowfall in the north or freezing rain in the south, Indiana school districts prioritize student safety when deciding to delay, close, or shift to remote learning.

How to Check for Your School

Indiana residents have several reliable ways to stay informed during a weather event:

  1. TV & Radio News: Local stations provide the most comprehensive lists of “Cancellations and Delays.

    • Indianapolis: WTHR (Channel 13), WISH-TV (Channel 8), FOX59.

    • Northern IN: WNDU (South Bend), WANE 15 (Fort Wayne).

    • Southern IN: WEHT/WTVW (Evansville).

  2. Official District Alerts: Most Indiana schools now use apps like ParentSquare or Skyward to send automated calls, texts, and emails directly to parents.

  3. State Travel Maps: The Indiana County Travel Status Map is a great indicator; if your county is under a “Warning” (Red) status, school closures are almost certain.

Common Delay & Closing Categories

Indiana schools typically follow a standardized set of procedures for inclement weather:

Plan Schedule Impact eLearning Status
1 or 2-Hour Delay Buses and classes start 60–120 minutes late. Dismissal remains at the normal time. No eLearning; classes are in-person.
School Closed All buildings are closed. No transportation provided. Traditionally a “snow day” to be made up later.
eLearning Day Buildings are closed, but students complete assignments online. Yes. Assignments are usually posted by 9:00 AM.

Note on eLearning: Under current Indiana law (HB-1093), many districts are limited to three “asynchronous” eLearning days per year. If a district exceeds this, they may have to add days to the end of the school year in June.

Decision-Making Factors

Superintendents often begin driving local roads as early as 4:00 AM. Key factors include:

  • Air Temperature: Many Indiana schools trigger a delay if the wind chill is predicted to be -10°F or lower.

  • Rural Road Safety: While main highways may be clear, bus safety on rural “chip-and-seal” roads is a primary concern.

  • Visibility: Heavy fog or blowing snow that prevents bus drivers from seeing children at stops will often trigger a delay.
